Hello, dear friend and reader!
I trust this message finds you in good health.
As I write from a sun-drenched Paris, the upcoming heat wave (another one!) makes me think about relocating to cooler regions.
Recently, I read an intriguing account from my Mum about a stray cat she encountered in Rome, Bambi (see the link below).
This inspired me to consider the cities where stray cats are protected and cherished. Let me share my findings:
Rome: Undoubtedly at the forefront, Rome offers legal protection to its feline residents. Historical sites like Torre Argentina have been repurposed as Cat sanctuaries. Here, amidst the ancient ruins, an army of devoted volunteers care for the cats, offering them food and care.
Istanbul: This city embodies a heartwarming community spirit toward its feline inhabitants. Cats are commonly cared for by residents and shopkeepers, and no one is chasing them away. The documentary "Kedi" provides a profound glimpse into this unique relationship.
St. Petersburg: The famous Hermitage Museum provides refuge to a group of cats tasked with managing the rodent population. The museum staff cares for them, and they even have a designated press secretary.
Tokyo: Though Tokyo exercises strict animal control measures, there's a nearby haven known as Aoshima Island or "Cat Island". Here, cats comfortably outnumber humans, living in peaceful coexistence.
I must also mention cities such as Tel Aviv, San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Marrakech, where cats are welcomed and get food, shelter and care.
Regarding Paris and London, both cities have admirable cat protection initiatives, such as the Fondation Brigitte Bardot in Paris. However, they need the unique care seen in places like Rome.
Let's conclude by noticing that much work remains to be done and that we, cats, deserve better treatment and protection.
The city of Rome is the perfect example of what should be done. Here is the story of Bambi, written by Mum, as an example:
Dear friend, I wish you a wonderful week ahead. May it be filled with moments of joy and inspiration.
Your loving writer,
Freddy
I love to hear about kindness to animals and about people unselfishly giving of their time like this ❤️
It makes me happy to know there are kind humans who care. Btw. we met several friends during our vacations by feeding cats. We know each other for 30 years and are very close, thank to the cats🐈
