Pearl ran into our garden one stormy night.
Of course, I wasn't outside to welcome her; I was indoors, cowering under the bed. You remember that yellow monster that thunders up in the sky and tears it apart with its blinding light, don’t you? Well, it was looking for me again.
"Where is that Freddy, that rascal?” it seemed to be yelling. “I’m going to swallow him up all in one gulp! Hey, you people down there, have you seen Freddy?”
And it thunders and thunders. Oh, my … that is definitely something to be afraid of, isn’t it? But please, if it ever asks you, say you don’t even know me. Say something like, "Freddy? Who’s that? A frog? A rabbit?"
As I said, I couldn’t greet Pearl under these circumstances, but Mum did it for me. She had gone out to check that all the cats were safe. It was raining heavily. While she was looking after Lulu, who was reluctant to come inside, she heard a car approaching slowly. It stopped right in front of the garden gate. She wondered who could be coming to call at this late hour. When she heard the car door open and close, she expected someone would ring the bell. But the car started up again and quickly moved off.
